Kristian Vlahoviček holds a PhD in Bioinformatics and works as a Professor in Computational Biology at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and an adjunct professor at the University of Oslo, Norway. He won the EMBO Young Investigators Programme installation grant and has been running an internationally competitive research group in Croatia for past 10 years. His bioinformatics group develops computational tools and uses machine learning techniques to tackle open questions in developmental genomics and metagenomics. Kristian is a strong proponent of science reforms in Croatia and evidence-based policy making. He served in the steering committee of Croatia’s successful science funding body, the Unity through Knowledge Fund (UKF) and has participated in several strategy-drafting panels at the university and national level. He was also one of the independent experts for the World Bank regional R&D strategy for innovation and data provider for the Croatia’s Smart Specialisation Strategy.
